Studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; recognized expert on
urban life and urban development worldwide; author of many book and articles
about world cities; frequent professional speaker at international conferences on
urban planning and the challenges confronting global cities in the 21st century

His books include five about Tokyo alone, most recently Tokyo: The Shogun’s
City at the 21st Century (1998, Wiley), the reference volume Historical Dictionary
of Tokyo (2010, Scarecrow Press), and a new book entitledRoppongi Crossing: The
Demise of a Storied Tokyo Nightclub District and the Reshaping of a Global
City that is now in production at the University of Georgia Press

United States citizen; he lived in Tokyo for more than 10 years and knows the
city well; he has also lived in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Singapore, Phnom Penh
(Cambodia), and Kyiv (Ukraine); for six years he drove a cab at night in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, of all places, where he saw everything there is to see of
the underbelly of urban life
